Real Beauty Sketches - Assignment Example Repetitions can either be of identical or almost identical words. The phrase ââ¬ËDo you think you are more beautiful than you sayâ⬠has been repeated severally in this film. The film also ends with a similar phrase, ââ¬Ëyou are more beautiful than you thinkââ¬â¢. Other words from this film, as used by the strangers depict the principle of binary opposition. Each woman describes themselves in a predominantly negative way. Strangers use different phrases such as ââ¬Ëprotruding jawââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëbig foreheadââ¬â¢, and ââ¬Ërounder faceââ¬â¢ to mean one and the same characteristic and to answer to the phrase ââ¬ËTell me about your chinââ¬â¢. Some repetition within this film is essential to the theme of the campaign. ââ¬Ëyou are more beautiful than you thinkââ¬â¢ has been repeated severally to make it known to the women that they are more beautiful than they think, as depicted from the stranger's views. à The things we hear about us from other people may not be of any importance. Some women described their chin from what they were told for instance, ââ¬Ëmy mom told me I had a big jawââ¬â¢.

SIDS Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 2
SIDS - Research Paper Example Although there is need for more research, the current notion denotes that SIDS results when an infantââ¬â¢s body experience difficulty in regulating blood pressure, temperature or breathing (or a merger of these factors) because of a developmental problem or an underlying vulnerability. Additionally, when infants get stressed by external factors, with inclusion of factors like sleeping on their stomachs, they can easily die of SIDS. An action that parents can take in order to shun occurrence of SIDS is to ensure their infants sleep on their back but not stomach. This ensures that a baby breathes more easily and also prevents the chances of them breathing in their own exhaled air that can collect under their nose, mainly if the infant cuddles a lot with the pillow or blanket. In addition, parents must ensure their babies sleep in rooms with appropriate temperatures, which offers warmth to them (William, 2009). An article ââ¬Å"Sudden Infant Death Syndromeâ⬠by Polina Gelfer and Michelle Tatum provides current scientific evidence regarding SIDS. Gelfer and Tatumââ¬â¢s epidemiologic study indicates that the age groups between 2-4 months face the highest risk of SIDS; whereby 91% of infant mortality occurs between the ages 1-6 months old. Thus the research further implies that the preterm infants and low-birth-weight infants experience highest risk of SIDS (Gelfer & Tatum, 2014). Additionally, Gelfer and Tatum comment that SIDS normally occurs seasonally, whereby more deaths occur during winter as a result of factors such as overheating within the houses (Gelfer & Tatum, 2014). Normally, several factors including modifiable as well as non-modifiable have been proven to have considerable associations with SIDS (Gelfer & Tatum, 2014). There exist possibilities that case control design normally used in the study of risk factors for SIDS, brings about unmeasured

The civil rights movements Essay Example for Free
The civil rights movements Essay This threat led to some improvement. Rooseveltââ¬â¢s order on discrimination however did not apply to the armed forces. At the start of the war, the army refused to train black officers; the air force would not let them train as pilots; and the navy would only use black servicemen in the kitchens. Black peoplesââ¬â¢ blood could not be used for wounded white servicemen. Some of these barriers were broken down by government pressure during the war: 600 black pilots saw combat before the end of the war, and all three of the services eventually had black officers. However, all black servicemen had to fight in segregated units. Blacks were not allowed to die alongside whites. In 1948 President Truman officially banned the segregation of black and white people in the armed forces. However small, this marked a large step in equal rights for black people. Segregation between whites and blacks was a prominent issue. It needed to be broken down before the two races could be equal. Both segregation on buses and schools were abolished due to blacksââ¬â¢ peaceful protests. Famously Rosa Parks, who was sitting in the Negro section of a bus, refused to get up for a white man. Martin Luther King organised a local bus boycott, stopping most black people using busses in the whole city which meant that most buses were now almost empty because black people were the biggest bus users as most were too poor to afford cars. Victory finally came on 13 November 1956 when, just as in schools, the Supreme Court announced that segregation was illegal on buses. In the southern states ââ¬ËWhite Citizens Councilsââ¬â¢ were formed to fight integration in schools and they encouraged employers to sack black people who stood up for their civil rights. In Congress Southern Senators signed a Manifesto in 1956, promising to campaign against integration. There were very violent examples where black children were blocked from going to school by white supremacists. When there was an attempt to de-segregate the Central High School in the town of Clinton, Tennessee in 1956 there were riots. Hundreds of white people, many of them in the Ku Klux Klan, stopped black students entering the school and orchestrated attacks on black people around the town, and many of them left town all together. In response to this, many supporters of the Civil Rights (many of them white) had had enough and decided to ââ¬Ëform a posseââ¬â¢ of 47 of supporters and to take on the supremacists with a wide ââ¬Ëcollection of weaponsââ¬â¢. Fighting on the streets was only averted by the arrival of the National Guard who arrested the leaders of the racist group surrounding the school Continuing dislike of segregation in the town actually led to the white racists blowing up the school in 1958. This was not a single case. The aggression shown by the whites is pretty startling ââ¬â very violent (blowing up a school) and involves governors and state troops, especially against children who are innocent in this race war. With the media, their aggression shows their weakness. However blacks are portrayed very well to the media as they use non-violent protest contrary to the whites. They also get the support of the military which is ideal as they do not need to be shown being violent. It also shows that some white people seem to have been changing their minds, caused by violence and blackââ¬â¢s peacefulness and Christianity. The Civil Rights Movements laid down the opportunity for equality between whites and blacks; the legislation needed was put into place, however the whites themselves needed convincing. The same people, who were in the Ku Klux Klan fighting against the blacks, were now expected to support equality. Despite this, mentalities were starting the change. Due the non-violence and innocence of their campaign, whites were starting to support the blacks in their struggle for equality. In this way, the Civil Rights Movements can be seen as a complete success, but a little more is needed to convince the inherently racist white southerners that this was the right thing to do before there is absolute equality. Samurais Values In The Tale Of Genji English Literature Essay
Samurais Values In The Tale Of Genji English Literature Essay The Tale of Genji is one of the greatest works in Japanese and world literature. It was created at the turn of X-XI centuries, in the era of rapid formation and flowering of Japanese culture.à Its author was a lady, known as Murasaki Shikibu. This books tells about the life of that period in Japan, having some historical incidents, including the life and traditions of samurai. It tells about the life ofà Genji, a son of theà Japanese emperor, also known as Hikaru Genji. The tale concentrates on his romantic life and describes the customs of the aristocratic society of the time. Genjis was a well known man, respected and honorable, and also a good looking. His most important personality trait is the loyalty, the trait he shows to all the women in his life. Once Genji found a house on Gojo, over the roof of which he saw a green vine, with beautiful white flowers called yugao the twilight beauty. Soon Genji got acquainted with the lady of the house, they fell in love with each other, and he visited her every night. However, their happiness did not last long, as an evil spirit possessed Yugao and she suddenly died. Genji was so upset, he blamed himself for the death of his love. There is no telling how depressed and disappointed he was!. ( Puette, William J, 78) At the same time he kept everything in a secret, not to let anybody know what had happened, as it was a question of his reputation. With the help of Koremitsu, his confident, Yugaos funeral was held secretly, but with all due respect. One evening, one of Yugaos servant ladies Ukon told Genji who her mistress really was. Although she had blue blood in her veins, Yugao lost her parents when she was little. So shy and humble was Yugao that she would hide everything behind her sorrowful smiles. But her memories would never perish from Genjis heart. It is important to point out, that the main character was a samurai, so he had certain values. An outlook of Samurai Bushido is the unwritten code of conduct of Samurai in the society, it is a set of rules and norms of the true ideal of a warrior. Bushido means the way of the samurai, the warrior, in addition the word is also translated as duty, morality. Thus, bushido is samurai morality, virtue, moral and ethical code. Bushido is a practical morality, samurai believed it is method of improving mental and physical health.à Bushido was designed to teach proper life in feudal Japanese society.à It combinedà a theory of existence and the study of the human psyche, and solved issues related to the notion of the essence of the individual, its role in the world,à meaning of life, good and evil, moral values and moral ideal. Samurai was keenly awareà of their moral duty, in particular their personal responsibilities in relation to overlord, had to assess their own actions and deeds,à morally condemn themselves if misconduct, breach of duty.( Puette, William J, 145) The main value of samurai, first of all, was loyalty to overlord, expressed in service to overlord, to be of service is to put another above yourself. Loyalty is faithfulness or a devotion to a person or cause. It relied the provisions of loyalty, drawn from Shinto, Buddhist belief in impermanence of all earthly things, which strengthened from a samurai spirit of sacrifice and do not fear death, and philosophy of Confucianism, which made loyalty of the first virtue. Near loyalty was the principle of duty. (Shirane, 45) One of the key value of Samurai was personal courage, unbending courage. True courage is to live, when lawfully to live, and die when lawfully to die. Samurai should go to the death with a clear consciousness of what to do and that is not worth his dignity. The sense of honor is also very important. The consciousness of self-esteem is brought up in Samurai from childhood.à Warriors strictly guarded their good name, a sense of shame was for the samurai hardest.à We can see at in the book, while Genji always behaved with sense of honor, he said : I should weigh every word and always ask myself, is it true that Im going to say. Also Genji was polite with women, he showed his good attitude and manners to all the women in his life, as he never abandoned any of them.à He hadà the true goodness of the mind and spirit, the unbiased kindness to do good. Honor and glory valued higher than life for samurai, . In all his actions samurai was supposed to come from considerations of the higher justice and fairness. A true samurai had only one judge of his honor himself, as you cannot hide from yourself. It is important to point out such value as the Wisdom of Honesty, as honesty is the human quality of communicating and acting truthfully, related to truth as a value, and Genji tried to be honest, and first of all with himself. So The Tale of Genji is one of the greatest works in Japanese literature, as it truly depicts life and traditions of samurai in that time. The tale of Genji shows socio-philosophical traditions of the society, it is devoted to samurai tradition, existed for thousands of years.à Those looking fierce and tough warriors, ready at any time to resort to his sharp shiny swords, were stern and ascetic life, full of inner discipline and poetry. Their whole life comes down to, to die with dignity, while maintaining their honor. Their world is based on honor, generosity, service, courage, sacrifice and a highly developed culture. Love theme is reflected very touching in the book, and sad heartfelt poetry with oriental motifs emphasizes the dramatic, romantic atmosphere and a samurai love theme of the book. Feel the deep meaning, a philosophy, and enjoy the overall beauty of the book, and also learn a lot from the eastern people patience, generosity, diligence, discipline, ability to appreciate every moment of life lived Work cited: Puette, William J.à Guide to the Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu. University Food Service Menu Needs Revision Essay -- Argumentative Per
University Food Service Menu Needs Revision THE PURPOSE OF THIS REPORT The purpose of this report is to show the need to examine the current meal program services offered by University and to prove a need for a substantial revision of the menus and meals to accommodate the nutritional needs of all the students. The students, in particular, on which this report will focus is those students who are vegetarian (or those who do not eat any animal flesh), or vegan (those who do not eat any products that come from animals, such as milk, eggs, meat, and fat). THE CURRENT MEALS AND MENUES The current food service offers three meals per day, and these include some, but relatively few, vegetarian options for students with special dietary needs. In the average daily menu there is usually a choice that either doesnââ¬â¢t contain red meat or has a vegetable base in the ingredients. On the menus these meal choices are marked by a symbol of a carrot (see menus at http://www.iastate.edu/~residence_info/dining/dining.htm). Meals The morning meal consists of several hot dishes and toast, cereal, canned fruit, sometimes one fresh fruit option, and milk or juice. Students also have the option of having a waffle they make themselves. (Waffles are available for any of the meals). For the noon-time meal, students have the option of having a cold sandwich, or one of usually three hot meal items. There is always a salad bar and two choices of cereal. The evening meal is much like the noon-time meal. It also includes a salad bar and usually three hot main-courses and side dishes, but does not include the cold sandwich option. Escaping the Fog of Pride and Prejudice :: Pride Prejudice Essays
Escaping the Fog of Pride and Prejudice The words of the title of Jane Austen's novel, Pride and Prejudice, shroud the main characters, Elizabeth and Darcy in a fog. The plot of the novel focuses on how Elizabeth and Darcy escape the fog and find each other. Both characters must individually recognize their faults and purge them. At the beginning of the novel, it seems as if the two will never be able to escape the thick fog. The scene at the Netherfield ball makes the marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy much more climactic because the pride and prejudice of both increases greatly during the night. The Netherfield ball is the first time Darcy and Elizabeth dance. When Darcy asks Elizabeth she is so surprised and confused that she says yes to a man who she is determined to hate. At the Meryton ball she had quickly made a sketch of Darcy's character. Compared to Jane who "never [sees] a fault in any body" (11), she doesn't believe only the best in everyone. She is usually right about people. From simply hearing Mr. Collins' letter, she asks if he is a sensible man, which he proves not to be. She is precisely perceptive of everyone except Wikham and Darcy. At the Meryton ball, Darcy is very reserved. He refuses to dance with Elizabeth when Bingley asks him to, saying that Elizabeth is not handsome enough to tempt him. Elizabeth's pride is hurt and she characterizes Darcy as disagreeable and proud. When Elizabeth first meets Wikham, she is blinded by her prejudice of Darcy as she accepts everything harmful Wikham has to say of Darcy. The plot of the rest of the book revolves around Elizabeth discovering the true nature of both Darcy and Wikham. At the Netherfield ball, it seems this will never happen. From the beginning of the night, when Elizabeth discovers Wikham didn't attend the ball in order to avoid Darcy she "was resolved against any sort of conversation with him" (60). Her hate of Darcy is sharpened, yet when he asks her to dance, she accepts in her confusement. There is an awkwardness between the two as they start to dance.

Ah Q in Modern China
Chinese national character has long been tied up with the issue of ââ¬Å"face,â⬠and how best to ââ¬Å"saveâ⬠it.à The idea that what is important in any situation is not so much the actual outcome, but the way the situation looks to outsiders. This concept has been an enduring one from the feudalist imperial system that ruled China for two thousand years throughout its turbulent 20th century history of civil war and communism. It is a contributing factor to most of the major political and historical events that have taken place there, such as the Cultural Revolution, the annexations of Tibet and Xinjiang, the attitude towards Taiwan, the Tianââ¬â¢anmen Square Protests, and even the economy that grows at an average of 10% per year for over fifteen years. It is also well represented in Chinaââ¬â¢s literature and cultural life.à Many authors from the late Qing Dynasty onward have tried to define a Chinese national character through their works.à One of the most successful of these was Lu Xun.Born in Zhejiang province and educated in Japan, Lu Xun dedicated his works, both fiction and non-fiction, to the goal of defining Chinese qualities and healing the spiritual and moral needs of the Chinese people.à His most famous story was The True Story of Ah Q, published in a newspaper beginning in late 1921.It features a village loser who does nothing notable and is looked down upon by all who encounter him.à This story, however, has become ingrained in the Chinese culture and scholars such as Lee Ou-fan maintain that it holds influence even today. One of the major ways the story portrays saving face is in the way Ah Q relates to his defeats.à When he does something wrong, such as insulting someone for no good reason by not holding his tongue, he gets beaten up, but he then justifies it by claiming it to be an outrage that people like his ââ¬Å"sonsâ⬠could beat him up.His psychological victory is enough for him to justify anything, n o matter how pathetic it seems to the other villagers.à When he loses his gambling money in a mob, he justifies it by slapping himself so that heââ¬â¢ll have something to feel victorious over (Lu).This relates to Chinese mentality in general, from government actions to individuals.à The way China deals with any situation is to put a good face on it or to cover it up.à Passing an anti-secession law, such as the one the Party Congress enacted in 2005 for the show effect it would have on Taiwan, is only one in a long line of examples.Refusing to re-evaluate their currency in relation to the dollar, the lack of acknowledgement about SARS and AIDS, the blocking or censoring of websites such as google, wikipedia, and the BBC, the banning and rehabilitation of filmmakers such as Zhang Yimou and now Jia Zhangke-each contributes to the argument that Chinese character has not changed since Ah Qââ¬â¢s time.Another enduring aspect of Chinese mentality skillfully depicted here is that of the mob.à We see mobs in everyday village life, such as the gambling mob that steals Ah Qââ¬â¢s money, and also when he teases the nun.à While most people are at least respectful of religious individuals, no one in the crowd does anything but laugh as Ah Q disgraces the nun in order to get attention. He touches her bare skin and insinuates that she sleeps with a monk, both of which are extremely insulting, but no one does anything but laugh (Lu).à This kind of onlooker crowds can be found anywhere in China when there is a fight or traffic accident.à They reached the peak of their violence during the Cultural Revolution, in which many people were denounced before just such mobs of jeering onlookers.Mobs also come into the story near its end, when the sweep of history enters the quiet village in the form of the Xinhai Revolution of 1911.à Here the mobs try and loot the homes of anyone who is not ââ¬Å"revolutionary,â⬠meaning those of the wealthy. In the end, Ah Q is caught and executed as a scapegoat for the looting.à The end of this character is as unspectacular as the rest of his life had been.Through telling the story of this kind of small man, Lu is expressing his concern that the ââ¬Å"averageâ⬠Chinese person is becoming too much like Ah Q, and will be too afraid to participate when the real revolution comes around. That real revolution is still around the corner, and it remains to be seen if the growing Chinese middle class will ever be so discontent as to make a real change to their totalitarian government. The people today still need to take Luââ¬â¢s message to heart and realize that the actions of their government are viewed by the outside world the way a reader views Ah Q, as idiotic praising of past and hoping for future while neglecting the present by worrying more about ââ¬Å"saving faceâ⬠than any concrete action.Beijing can move all the Han people it wants into Tibet and Xinjiang, but it will never e radicate or assimilate these two different ethnicities completely, and will only require more ââ¬Å"saving faceâ⬠in the future when the never-ending sectarian violence escalates.Lu was very observant in pointing out these weaknesses in Chinese character, and the PRC would do good to take on his message as well, instead of just celebrating his image because Mao had him declared a communist hero. His true ideas were much more individualistic than what he is reduced to, and maybe someday China will truly see the significance of this great writer and thinker.Works CitedLu, Xun.à ââ¬Å"The True Story of Ah Q.â⬠à Trans.
